The Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce was pleased to host Galveston County Commissioner Joe Giusti and representatives from several county departments for an informative community discussion on projects and initiatives impacting the Bolivar Peninsula.

Key Updates

Highway 87 Remains a Top Priority

County officials acknowledged the ongoing challenges with Highway 87, including flooding, debris, and limited state funding. Efforts continue through regional transportation agencies and advocacy with state officials to advance long-term solutions. Residents were encouraged to remain engaged and communicate with their state representatives.

Economic Development Opportunities

Officials shared information about a major shipbuilding project expected to bring approximately 2,500 jobs to the region. Local businesses were encouraged to explore opportunities to provide products and services to support this growing industry.

Mosquito Control Improvements

The county's aerial mosquito control program is expected to resume in early July following aircraft repairs and testing. Additional larvicide treatments are currently being utilized to help manage mosquito populations.

Parks and Recreation Updates

  • The new fishing pier and Bayside Park are currently projected to open in late 2026 or early 2027.
  • Bayside Park will feature walking trails, fitness equipment, picnic areas, and bird observation opportunities.
  • Improvements to Grove Green Park are moving forward through the engineering and design phase.

Beach and Tourism Topics

County officials discussed beach vendor permitting, acknowledging concerns about the current permit process and committing to review potential improvements. Updates were also provided on beach maintenance, beach permit revenues, and future funding needs for beach nourishment and infrastructure projects. Road and Infrastructure Projects

Road & Bridge representatives provided updates on several projects, including:

  • Frenchtown Road elevation improvements to address flooding concerns.
  • Continued road preservation efforts.
  • Resumption of asphalt paving projects later this summer.
